الملخص
شهد الحوض الغربي للبحر المتوسط ومنذ أواخر العصر الوسيط وبداية العصر الحديث تفشي ظاهرة الأسر، وذلك نظرا للصراع الديني بين المسلمين والنصارى، حيث كان للقرصنة البحرية المتبادلة بين الطرفين دور كبير في ازدياد أعداد الأسرى، والذي كان ينتهي مطاف الكثير منهم إلى العبودية والرق، إلّا أنّه وفي الجزائر حظي بعض الأسرى، خاصة المتعلمين منهم، بمعاملة خاصة، حتى أنّهم تقلّدوا وظائف سامية في قصور الدايات والبايات، ممّا سمح لهم بالوقوف عن كثب حول واقع الحياة العامة في الجزائر خلال العهد العثماني، وعن الأعمال السياسية والعسكرية لحكام الجزائر. وتعتبر مذكرات الأسير تيدنا إحدى المصادر القيمة التي تحمل بين طيّاتها مادة خبرية هامة حول حالة الأسرى الأوربيين في الجزائر، كما أنّ مذكراته تزخر بمادة علمية قيّمة عن المنطقة الغربية من الجزائر خلال القرن 18م، وعن أعمال الباي محمد الكبير السياسية والعسكرية في منطقة بايلك الغرب.
