Marxism provides a framework for understanding and critiquing the unequal power relations initiated by colonialism. And with the project of privileging an African approach to neocolonialism, some African writers moved beyond the racial aspect. This paper discusses the deficiency of neocolonialism in Senegal through Sembene Ousmane’s fiction. The limitations of an emergent African bourgeoisie was the focus of Sembene’s two novels: The Money Order and Xala. This study aims at shedding light on a counter-discourse about Africa by the marginalized groups and through their own conscience. The novels’ analysis reveals the complexity of class struggles intersection with other forms of oppression in postcolonial Africa. It also highlights the need for socio-economic transformation to address these struggles in more equitable and sustainable ways.
