Impact Of Word-by-word Translation On Efl Students’ Written Productions

Abstract
Word-by-word translation from L1 into English is one of the impediments that lead students to think in Arabic and make up utterances that make no sense in English. This study aims to explore the reasons underlying EFL students’ use of word-by-word translation as well as its negative effect on their written productions in terms of meaning and language structure. Accordingly, this research has been carried out quantitatively and qualitatively by means of a questionnaire and a writing assignment. The findings showed that translation prevents EFL learners from using the English language appropriately. ملخص تعد الترجمة الحرفية من اللغة الإم إلى اللغة الإنجليزية من بين العوائق التي تدفع الطلاب إلى التفكير باللغة العربية واختلاق عبارات لا معنى لها في اللغة الإنجليزية. تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى البحث في الأسباب الكامنة وراء استخدام طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية للترجمة الحرفية بالإضافة إلى تأثيرها السلبي على تعابيرهم الكتابية من حيث المعنى و التركيبة اللغوية. وعليه فقد تم إجراء هذا البحث باستخدام وسائل بحث كمية ونوعية ً عن طريق استبيان وتمرين كتابي. أظهرت النتائج أن الترجمة تمنع متعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية من استخدام اللغة بشكل مناسب.
