Authors : Benabdelmoumene Maria . Bensafa Abdelkader .

Abstract

This paper seeks to shed light on the challenges encountered by English for Business and Economics teachers at University Centre of Maghnia, especially the challenges related to specialised language knowledge and course materials. It also explores how they overcome these challenges to achieve the final course objectives. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observation were used to obtain qualitative data. Using thematic analysis approach, findings revealed five main themes: Unfamiliarity with specialised language knowledge, the total absence of ESP training, the lack of teaching materials, challenges concerning the students and challenges concerning the organisation and administration. Hence, this study suggests that Algerian policymakers need to take a serious consideration of English for Specific Purposes training programmes to equip teachers with necessary knowledge and skills to face the requirements of ESP teaching, which in turn results in improving the quality of Algerian ESP instruction.
