الملخص
يرى جيمس أن تحريف الدين يؤدي إلى خداع يصبح العالم مماثلا لرغباتنا الشخصية، وعند توفر هذا الإحساس نؤجل الفناء ونعيش فيما هو عالمي، فحياة المجتمع التي نعيش فيها ونحقق فيها وجودنا هي الرمز المناسب لهذه العلاقة والأفعال التي ندرك بها علاقاتنا التي تربطنا بالأخرين هي طقوسها وشعائرها الوحيدة. تعتبر البراغماتية فلسفة عملية تطبيقية، تحث على الفعل والتقدم، إذن فهي دعوة إنسانية منطلقها الإيمان الراسخ بالكرامة الإنسانية، وبهذا تتقاطع البراغماتية مع المذهب الإنساني في نقطة المحور وهي اعتبار الإنسان هو الموضوع الأصلي والهدف النهائي لهما.
