English Language Teachers' Perceptions On The Use Of Needs Analysis In English For Specific Purposes Materials Development At The University Of Algiers 3

Authors : Ghezali Amina .

Abstract

Needs Analysis is considered the corner stone in the process of ESP course design and materials development. The awreness of its importance and the way it should be carried out represents a real issue for ESP teachers at the University of Algiers 3 in particular and Algerian Universities in general. In fact, the perceptions of teachers towards the significance and practice of NA affect the quality of the materials adopted, and thus students' motivation. This study is conducted to investigate the way ESP teachers at the University of Algiers 3 perceive the adoption and application of the NA mechanism. The subjects are 25 ESP teachers from 3 different faculties. To collect data, the researcher used a 3-point Likert scale questionnaire and adopted a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings show that most of the teachers are not aware of the significance of NA practice. Besides, their materials are not based on Needs Analysis and thus they are not relevant to their learners' needs. Therefore, the researcher recommends raising ESP teachers' awareness through appropriate training and encouraging the application of real effective Needs Analysis to assure the designing of courses and developing materials that are tailored to students' actual needs.
