This paper attempts to provide a systematic description of the educational context in Algeria with general reference to the teaching/learning of EFL reading at the university level. Reading is our focus of interest in this work due to its invaluable benefits in language learning and its importance in our lives. As for our choice of 1st year university level; because it is the only year were students have reading comprehension as a separated module. A thorough picture of the various variables and characteristics of the learning situation of the group of subjects selected for the study is presented. University teachers’ profile is defined and the methodology they use is discussed. Furthermore, EFL students profile is emphasized and their needs are analyzed. The status of reading in the Department of English is detailed in this work with explicit clarification of the stated objectives and the adopted methodology in teaching this invaluable skill. In this way we would aim hopefully to pave the way towards improvement in our reading classrooms.
