Résumé : En 1858 deux magnifiques bustes avaient été trouvés dans les thermes du centre de l’antique Cherchell, Caesarea. Le premier est celui d’un personnage d’un âge mûr, décrit comme « aveugle ou homme à l’œil blessé », le second est celui d’un jeune homme cuirassé (Gauckler, 1895, pp. 150-152, pl. XVIII, n° 1). Celui-ci, depuis sa découverte et jusqu’à nos jours, avait fait l’objet de plusieurs études et de différentes interprétations. Toutefois, l’identité et la datation précise de sa fabrication n’ont jamais été résolues. Dans cet article nous proposons de faire une nouvelle lecture iconographique et une analyse plus approfondie, en se basant sur l’un des éléments décoratifs du buste, mais aussi en faisant une comparaison avec les portraits de certains empereurs antonins. Abstract : In 1858 two magnificent busts were found in the thermal baths of the ancient Cherchell, Caesarea. The first one is that of a middle-aged figure, described as "blind or man with a wounded eye", the second one is that of a young man in armour (Gauckler, 1895, pp. 150-152, pl. XVIII, n° 1). This one, since its discovery and until today, had been the subject of several studies and different interpretations. However, the identity and precise dating of its manufacture have never been resolved. In this article we propose to make a new iconographic reading and a deeper analysis, based on one of the decorative elements of the bust, but also making a comparison with the portraits of some Antonine emperors.
