Abstract

Prior to Algeria’s independence in 1962, the French language was widely used by virtue of the fact that the country was under French rule, and paradoxically the French language has been the language of the educated elite. Here the term elite, as used in this article, refers to the offspring of the French School. Yet two conflicting views exist in analyzing the linguistic situation in Algeria. One, held by politicians, is that Arabic is the national and official language of the country, and French is a foreign language (status planning).
