La stylistique moderne tire son essence, à la fois, de la tradition rhétorique et de la linguistique. C’est de ce double héritage qu’elle va s’abreuver pour devenir une perspective moderne, avec pour pionnier Charles Bally. La stylistique moderne a connu diverses mutations avant de s’imposer aujourd’hui comme une discipline pleine et autonome. Depuis la Grèce antique jusqu’à l’école genevoise, en passant par les romains et les linguistes psychologues, la stylistique a connu l’influence respective des rhétoriciens grecs et romains : Gorgias, Protagoras, Aristote, Cicéron , Quintilien et des linguistes allemands et Genevois : Humboldt, Steinthal, Wundt, Sechehaye, Bally. Leurs différents apports rhétoriques et linguistiques ont exercé des actions sur la stylistique qui peut être appréciée sous un double angle historique et pratique. Modern stylistics draws its essence from both the rhetorical tradition and linguistics. It is from this dual heritage that it will draw to become a modern perspective, pioneered by Charles Bally. Modern stylistics has undergone a number of changes before establishing itself today as a full-fledged, autonomous discipline. From ancient Greece to the Genevan school, via the Romans and psychological linguists, stylistics has been influenced by the Greek and Roman rhetoricians Gorgias, Protagoras, Aristotle, Cicero and Quintilian, and by the German and Genevan linguists Humboldt, Steinthal, Wundt, Sechehaye and Bally. Their various rhetorical and linguistic contributions have had an impact on stylistics that can be assessed from two angles: historical and practical.
