Conjunctive Cohesion In Arabic United Nations Texts And Their English Translations: A Corpus-based Study

Abstract
This corpus-based study investigates the use of Arabic and English conjunctions in some United Nations texts in order to find out how they are interpreted as equivalents and to know how translators add or omit them in their translations. Using computer software, the use of conjunctions is compared. Findings reveal that the distribution of conjunctions in Arabic and English is the same. The only difference lies in the frequency of occurrence of those relations. It seems that Arabic texts are more explicitly cohesive than their English counterparts through the use of additives, causals and temporals.
