Since the 1980s, Algeria has seen a considerable decline in communicable diseases, accompanied by the emergence of non-communicable diseases. This change has been achieved thanks to a great deal of effort in terms of collective hygiene, vaccination, health coverage and education. This epidemiological transition has led to an increase in the morbidity of non-communicable diseases, which have become the main cause of mortality. However, the occurrence of the Covid-19 health crisis interrupted the pattern of this transition and brought it back into the second phase, where communicable and non-communicable diseases are proliferating in parallel. The aim of this article is to present and explain the epidemiological transition in Algeria since 1980.
