The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), approved in 1999, aims to measure the contribution of tourism consumption to an economy, focusing on a regular flow of financial data that provides comprehensive information on the economic relevance of tourism and can be compared over time at the regional, national and international levels. The TSA has been developed by many countries such as Canada, France and Mexico and is being redesigned by other countries in order to incorporate the international standards recommended by the UNWTO and provide accurate measures of the size of the tourism sector, the nature of tourism demand and supply, and the direct contribution of tourism to GDP and employment, as well as to establish comparisons and interactions with other sectors of the economy. The article analyzes the methodology of measuring tourism through the CST, ranging from the basic concepts, approaches and challenges for implementation as well as the results that have been drawn by its application.
