A Comparative Critical Multimodal Analysis Of Trump's Decision Of The Us Embassy Move In Arab And American Online Newspapers

Authors : Hadil Ashraf Jendeya .

Abstract

This study aims at comparing linguistic and visual strategies through which Trump's decision of the US embassy move is represented in Arab and American newspapers and finding out the potential impacts of these strategies on their targeted readers. Ten newspaper headlines were analyzed following Fowler (1991) model of news language, then ten images associated with the analyzed headings were observed following Kress and van Leeuwen ( 2006 ) model of visual grammar. The results show that in both Arab and American English newspapers, headlines and their associated images complement each other in delivering intended ideologies to their targeted readers . For instance, American newspapers use both headlines and images to positively represent Trump as a powerful leader, while Arab newspapers use different linguistic and visual strategies to negatively represent him showing his submission to Israel and giving him less power on Palestine's affairs. Thus, readers are advised to accurately examine the linguistic and visual components of news to make sure that what they read is the truth and not its fake version.
