Abstract

The polymerization of styrene catalyzed by Maghnite-Na+, environmentally friendly alternative catalysts, is investigated. This paper shows that the anionic polymerization of styrene is initiated by Maghnite-Na+ at room temperature in bulk. The polymerization reaction product was characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The catalyst was characterized by X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopy. It was removed from the mixtures of the products by simple filtration and its possible regeneration and reuse. The effect of the amount of Maghnite-Na+ on the molecular weight is studied. The results indicate that the molecular weight increased with the decrease in the proportion of catalyst. The DSC thermogram shows smaller Tg of polystyrene than expected, this is due to the lower polymer molecular weight.
