Contributing Factors To The Emergence Of The Petroleum Industry In The Usa Up To 1859

Authors : Fatima Zohra Melki .

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution was at the basis of the development of the human civilisation to an unprecedented level from the mid-18th century onwards. This development was caused by the use of different sources of energy successively wood, coal, natural gas, electricity, and petroleum, which were used for two main purposes: heating and illumination. The development of the exploitation of petroleum to procure cheap and much efficient source of illumination than those already used (candles, coal-gas, natural gas, or electricity, although in its early stages) depended on human, financial, and technological factors that were at the basis of the emergence of its industry in the USA. This article attempts to study the origins or the prerequisites that helped in the emergence of the petroleum industry in the USA up to 1859. It follows a plan of study that starts with the energy resources and the sources of illumination that existed and prevailed in the USA from the colonial period to 1859. This helps in establishing the most important factors that led to the emergence of the petroleum industry in the USA, which began from 1859 when the first oil well was drilled.
