Economic Growth And Sustainable Development: Reconciling Economy And Ecology In The Developing Countries

Authors : Ferguène Améziane . Baghdadi Ibrahim .

Abstract

There is a general perception that economic theory does not take into account the environmental concern (i.e., the protection of the nature) in its endeavours to understand and foster economic growth. This is to a large extent inaccurate. For long time, the issue of non-renewable natural resources, as well as that of pollution have been subject of contentious debates among economists. If we put aside the so-called “Degrowth theory” (which as yet has had no concrete implementation), the alternative solutions to the mass-production model are based on the concept of “Ecological development” and/or the more often used concept of “Sustainable Development”. After a concise presentation of the different approaches of the environmental issue in the economic theory (first section) and a brief recalling of the international conferences and reports about sustainable development (second section), this paper tackles (in a third section) the famous dilemma economic growth versus nature protection (or in other words, dilemma economy versus ecology) in developing countries, to which it concludes that sustainable development in poor countries is not only an internal challenge for each of them but a crucial stake of North-South international cooperation.
