Ldiomaticity Mistakes In English - Arabic Translation: The Case Of Ens Agrégation Papers

Authors : Abcha Sadok .

Abstract

Translating literary texts from Arabic into English for native-Arabic speakers is a challenging task because of the various difficulties encountered in this process. The difficulties mainly concern the stylistic and syntactic features that are peculiar to the two languages, which come from different language families and have different cultural backgrounds. Expressing the Arabic meaning in English requires a sound knowledge of English and its culture. One of the criteria of a good translation is producing a translated text which looks as if it were written in idiomatic English and has little or no aspects that show that it is a translation. Achieving such goal requires first of all from the translator an effort to lend the English text an idiomatic colour. Therefore the translator should be concerned with idiomaticity, for the success of translation depends to a large extent on expressing the Sl sentence meanings faithfully in an idiomatic way. This paper seeks to address one of the difficulties of Arabic-English translation, which is idiomacity.
