Muhammad Arkoun distinguishes between the Quranic speech and the Quranic text. The Qur'anic speech discourse represents the inspired oral speech or the moment of revelation. The Quranic text represents the written text of the Qur'an in the form of the Mus-haf, The intellectual project at Arkoun seeks to read Islamic history as a whole, based on this differentiation, asking about the historical changes that have taken place in the Quranic speech and text.
