Rich countries in natural resources grow slower on average, than countries with poor resources. This "resource curse" is an empirical documented by a number of studies, starting with the seminal work of Sachs and Warner (1995). This paper investigates the impact of institutional quality on relation between oil abundance and economic growth in Algeria, applying a VECM model using annual data over the period 1970-2014. The research found that institutional quality has a negative impact on economic growth, but oil abundance affected economic growth inversely. Therefore, we argue that lower institutions quality, rather than oil abundance per se, drives the resource curse paradox in Algeria.
oil, economic growth, institutional quality, corruption, bureaucracy.
