L’écriture De L’histoire De L’algérie, Période Coloniale (1830-1962) : Sources Et Perspectives

Auteurs : Boukechour Mohamed Salah .

Writing the history of formerly colonised nations can often turn in to an extremely complex undertaking. There are numerous factors encumbering the historian’s work, some of which are of a material and practical order, others more ideological and even psychological. Algeria constitutes a perfect example of the problems encountered by historians of formerly colonised nations. When the country gained its independence from France in 1962, after more than 130 years of virulent settler colonialism, it was faced with a particular challenge: how to write Algerian history? The task was rendered more complicated still by the fact that the source material for the colonial period remains, for the most part, in the hands of the former coloniser. This text sheds light on some of the dilemma as arising from this situation.
