الملخص

The changes of the post- cold war- international order and the new challenges. The changes which have been selected are those related to the structure of the international system, redistribution and upgrading of military, economic andtechnological powers. The end of the cold war opened the door to academic speculation and theorization over the future world order and what it implies for international relations and its sub-fields such as international conflicts and conflict management and resolution. Three out of the dominant post-cold war theoretical perspectives on the world order, are worth examining because of the attention they have received in academic and political circles. The first is “the end of history thesis” put forward by Francis Fukuyama; the second is “The clash of civilization thesis” formulated by Professor Samuel P. Huntington; and thethird one is “The sense and power” incepted by Zaki Laidi. Each of the theses regards the world as organized around some particular values and institutions, and describes the future international order and international relations, but with no specific aim as how future international conflicts would besolved or managed. The present world order may be best characterized as chaotic because no definite rules and institutions govern the complex relationships between its actors. This situation is not new in the history of international relations, but it is not the one that would necessarily lead to a new order since there are contradictory tendencies which may compromise the nature andextent of change to be tolerated.
