The teaching of poetry appears to present various problems for both students and teachers alike. A great majority of our students are simply "turned off" by poetry. For them poetry is too complicated because of its deviant language. Unfortunately, the teaching of poetry continues to be an unsatisfactory and problematic affair. Poetry is seen as being the highest literary genre, yet it holds the lowest priority in our English department and possibly other departments throughout the country.
