Abstract

This paper discusses the identity crisis and the absence of a strategy in Arab satellite channels as well as their failure in establishing a dialogue with the other. What are the causes of the identity crisis in Arab satellite television channels? Why do they lack a clear media strategy? Why is there a phenomenon of dependency and imitation in Arab satellite channels? What are the implications on ethics and values? What are the causes of the failure of the dialogue with the other and what are the main challenges that face Arab satellite channels? Poor production, lack of freedom, the Arab media crisis, and dependency and imitation, all contributed to a poor vision and a crisis identity in Arab satellite channels. The Arab media failed to get rid of dependency, imitation, and loyalty to the system. On the contrary, they contributed to a large extent to maintain the status quo, and to pollute the media sphere and to diffuse canned culture and alien values through indecent satellite channels, reality television and other kinds of channels that propagate consumerism, marginalization, and shallow thinking and reasoning. Such satellite channels are alienating the Arab viewers instead of giving them an opportunity and provide them with a forum where they can participate in the public sphere and form a civil society through which they can express their concerns and problems. Arab satellite channels also failed in establishing a dialogue with the other, and refuting propaganda campaigns, stereotypes, misinformation and defamation against Arabs and Muslims.
