Résumé

The purpose of this paper is to examine the turbulent flow and forced convection heat transfer characteristics of air for rectangular horizontal two-dimensional channel provided with flat-rounded transverse baffles which are arranged on the bottom and top channel walls in a periodically staggered way. The fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter of the channel ranging from 4500 to 18000. The governing equations that describe the flow and energy were integrated by the finite volumes method, in two dimensions, employing the FLUENT 6.3 software with the standard k-ε model to describe the turbulence. In particular, flow and energy fields, pressure loss, and local and average heat transfer coefficients were obtained. The experimental runs were carried out for different values of Reynolds numbers and baffle heights at constant wall temperature condition along the top and bottom walls. The numerical results show that the flow is characterized by strong deformations and large recirculation regions. In general, Nusselt number and friction coefficient increase with the flow Reynolds number. The results also indicate that the heat transfer and pressure loss parameters increase as the baffle height does, for a given flow rate.
