The Western Sahara Stalemate: Historical Background, Conflicting Attitudes And Future Prospects

Authors : Belkacem Iratni .

Abstract

The Western Sahara was inscribed in the list of dependent countries and territories to benefit from the right for self-determination by the United Nations in 1964 in conformity with its declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, adopted in December 1960. More than three decades later, the implementation of the Self-determination principle has not been completed, despite the long-time resistance of the Sahrawi people under the Spanish colonization that lasted until 1975, and the process of annexation imposed by Morocco over this territory on the basis of the so-called “historic rights,” claimed by the Makhzen rulers. This article attempts to assess the genesis of this conflict, scrutinize the conflicting attitudes implicating the Moroccan rulers and the Polisario Front which is fighting to recover its national rights and sovereignty over its territory.
