From Symbolism To Cognition: Decoding Black Colour Metaphors In Algerian Arabic Communication

Authors : Aissa Latifa .

Abstract

The research at hand aims to investigate the cognitive aspects of black colour metaphors in Algerian Arabic. By exploring the cultural meanings and social connotations associated with the colour black, the study seeks to uncover the metaphorical usage of black in diverse linguistic contexts. The research draws inspiration from conceptual metaphor theory, as proposed by Lakoff and Johnson, and adopts cognitive linguistic perspectives advocated by Langacker and Kövecses. The study employs a purposive sampling technique, informed by sociolinguistic considerations put forth by Lakoff and Tannen, to understand the intricate relationships between language, culture, and cognition within Algerian Arabic discourse. Thematic analysis, influenced by methodologies endorsed by Lakoff and Johnson, will be utilized to reveal the cognitive associations and cultural significance embedded in the metaphorical use of black. The study adheres to ethical standards advocated by Levinson, prioritizing informed consent, confidentiality, and researcher reflexivity to navigate and mitigate potential biases, ensuring the integrity of the investigation. The anticipated findings hold promise in shedding light on the symbolic depth of black colour metaphors in Algerian Arabic, offering valuable insights into the cognitive underpinnings of metaphorical language usage within the unique cultural and linguistic landscape of Algeria.
