Achieving Food Security In Algeria Balancing Self-sufficiency With Strategic Trade

Authors : فاروق Bourihane . Hayet Hemissi .

Abstract

Abstract: This paper examines the relation between self-sufficiency and food security. While some food self-sufficiency benefits food security, a rigid focus on domestic production can be counterproductive. We argue for a nuanced approach with economic flexibility to leverage comparative advantages and engage in strategic trade, ultimately strengthening food security. Conversely, rigid self-sufficiency policies with economically unviable import substitution can undermine food security. True food security goes beyond domestic production; it requires access to a stable and affordable food supply, even though international trade. This paper advocates for a balanced approach that embraces both domestic production and strategic trade partnerships for a more sustainable and resilient food security strategy.
