This research delves into the factors affecting the financial health of Algerian commercial banks. Focusing on a six-year period (2010-2015) and analyzing data from twelve banks, the study utilizes multiple regression, a statistical tool that teases out the connections between multiple factors and a single outcome. The analysis reveals some interesting trends. Bigger banks seem to rake in more profits (net income), possibly due to economies of scale where costs are spread across a larger customer base. However, smaller banks appear to be more efficient at squeezing out profits from interest income relative to their expenses, as evidenced by their higher net interest margin (NIM). Additionally, banks with a healthier capital buffer (capital ratio) tend to be more profitable, potentially because this buffer allows them to take on calculated risks that translate into higher returns. It's important to note that the study doesn't necessarily negate the potential influence of other factors like credit risk, liquidity risk, administrative efficiency, inflation, or economic growth. These factors might not have shown a significant impact within the study's timeframe or sample size, and further research with a broader scope or a larger dataset could reveal their influence. Ultimately, this study sheds light on the key drivers of bank performance in the Algerian context. We learn that bank size, capital adequacy, and potentially the efficiency of smaller banks in generating interest income play a significant role. Future research could delve deeper into the non-significant factors and expand the study's scope to provide a more comprehensive picture of the Algerian banking sector.
