Abstract: Many decision-makers and politicians believe that invoking fear in messages can effectively change the attitudes and behaviors of the targeted individuals. However, social psychological research reveals that the use of fear can be less effective in persuading others and may sometimes lead to counterproductive results. This exploration of social heritage aims to synthesize research on the effectiveness of fear activation in message processing to change individual attitudes and behaviors. The theoretical models underlying the potential connection between fear and persuasion are presented along with illustrations where fear activation has been tested, particularly in health prevention messages. Based on recent work in persuasion psychology, alternative models for fear activation are proposed, taking into account the acquired knowledge of message recipients specific characteristics and the persuasive effectiveness of other forms of messaging.
