Africa: A New Scramble For World Powers Or The' Biggest Frontier Of The 21st Century'?

Authors : Iratni Belkacem .

Abstract

For a long time, Africa was the target of colonial domination, the source of plunder of its riches, the arena for conflicts, and economic backwardness. Yet, this continent has huge natural wealth, valuable geostrategic assets, vibrant cultures, and a dynamic youth potential. The current world geostrategic mutations, exacerbated by the COVID-19 and the Ukraine-Russia war, have generated a new international scramble over Africa. They have also accentuated thorny challenges for this continent in terms of the spiral rise of food and energy prices, the spread of terrorism, and the consolidation of authoritarianism. However, these international changes have paved the way to greater resilience and better opportunities to make Africa an autonomous, responsible, and competitive world power, providing the inception of new development strategies.
