Since the Egyptian administration opened the regions of southern Sudan and annexed them to what was known as the Equatorial Directorate in the period from 1869 to 1889, it took upon itself the task of spreading Islam and the Arabic language in those regions. However, Egypt's withdrawal from Sudan in 1885 and then its return through the condominium rule of Sudan in 1899, Britain began to impose an embargo on Egypt in the southern Sudan region, in what was later known as the policy of closed areas. However, the conclusion of the 1936 treaty between Egypt and Britain, and Egypt's return to Sudan after the Egyptian army left it in 1924, made it turn towards confronting British policy in southern Sudan. It began besieging missionary and Christianization work there, and its preachers began to spread Islam and the Arabic language in those areas. It built schools and cells, established mosques, sent preachers, sheikhs, and preachers to all parts of the south, and stood on the lookout for British policy in the south.
