Translating International Treaties: A Corpus-based Approach To Training Translation Students

Authors : Krimat Noureddine .

Abstract

This paper sketches an outline of a corpus-based training on translating international treaties, devised by the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While the study departs from a narrative account by the senior translators in charge of the training, it provides a robust narrative analysis grounded in the theoretical framework of Corpus Linguistics. The training was analyzed based on corpus trajectory, typology, approaches, and competences. The paper demonstrates the versatility of corpora in translation practice and training and showcased an interesting experience while shedding light on its limitations. The outline of the Training drawn by the study and its subsequent analysis provided valid insights into the usefulness of corpus methodologies in translating international treaties and defined the competences needed to produce a text that shares equal authenticity with the source text, i.e., the negotiated text of the treaty.
