Although T.S. Eliot is often considered an English poet, dismissing his American roots is a mistake. D. Moody argues that Eliot's poetry is deeply influenced by the American experience and that his Anglophilia reflects anxiety towards his American predecessor, Walt Whitman. Eliot's The Waste Land and Whitman's "When Lilacs in the Dooryard First Bloom" illustrate Eliot's place within the American tradition, despite his frequent references to English writer Geoffrey Chaucer. Thus, Eliot's poetry cannot be separated from its Americanness.
