Algeria's Social Sustainability: A Regional Comparison Study (1990–2020)

Authors : Aoudia Nassira .

Abstract

The definition of development has been evolved over time. In addition to the economic pillar, it includes social and environmental pillars in an interacting way, namely the sustainable development, in 1987. In 2015, the United Nations enacted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) formally articulated and adopted in the 2030 Agenda, aiming for a more sustainable world by 2030. This study analyzes the social pillar of the sustainable development in Algeria, with a regional comparison to Morocco and Tunisia, throughout the period 1990-2020. The methodology adopted consists in analyzing 37 social indicators collected from the SDGs database published by the World Bank. These indicators reflect some targets of 06 goals of the 2030 Agenda (nutrition, health, education, gender equality, energy and peace and justice). The results show that the three regional countries had improved their social situation during the study period, but Algeria had not registered sufficiently good social results regionally.
