Bordj Yusuf Dey in el-Bathan: the Ottoman influence in the architecture of resorts around Tunis in the seventeenth century Towards the end of the sixteenth century, the Turks seized the Regency of Tunis and restored prosperity and security. Thus, a stage of reconstruction and embellishment of the city of Tunis and its surroundings begins. At the beginning of the 17th century, the reception of Andalusian refugees in Tunisia still contributed to the enrichment of the capital and its countryside where they were divided. As a result, Yusuf dey (1610-1637) proved to be a great builder and was responsible for the construction of several civil and religious monuments. In the same way he built a remarkable Bordj adjoining to the Andalusian dam of el-Bathan near Jedeida. This Bordj marks an important step in the transformation of architecture where the new influences were mixed with local elements and formed a unique architectural model. This is an excellent witness to the evolution of domestic architecture and to the various Ottoman artistic influences that have contributed to the transformation of domestic architecture in Tunis.
