Authors : Saidi Tariq .

Abstract

This paper used critical discourse analysis and postcolonial theory as a background to analyse the Algerian war of independence news reports published in the British press ( Times newspaper ). Norman Fairclough's Three-dimensional model of the critical discourse analysis with Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach were chosen to examine the ways the Algerian war of independence events, were described discursively in Times newspaper reporting, so this study questions the role of discourse in maintaining and reproducing the inequality of power relationships between FLN and France as one of the most important colonial powers. The results show an attempt to maintain and reproduce the existed unequal power relations between France and Algeria. the results show as well that Times applied what is known as paired complementary strategies, persuasive structures strategy. it was easy to perceive and determine the hyperbolic enhancement of Algerian revolutionist negative actions in the first half of wartime.
