Investing The Algerian Linguistic Diversity In Education: Exploring The Potentials Of Teaching French Via English As A Medium Of Instruction In Higher Education

Abstract
The main thesis of this study turns around the proposition that Algerian learners of English tend to develop positive attitudes towards English as opposed to certain negative attitudes towards French, oftentimes, gelled to colonialism. English, I claim, can be used as a source of motivation for learners of English to study French at the university, using the targeted language as a medium of instruction. To collect data, a survey questionnaire had been administered to 30 second year master students of English Didactics and Applied Languages. The findings of this study revealed that learners’ attitudes towards French are rather positive as they approved learning it at the University. As to the proposition of teaching French via English as the medium of instruction most of the interviewed learners supported it due to the motivation they develop towards English and the mutual interplay between the involved languages. Les apprenants algériens de l'anglais ont tendance à développer des attitudes positives envers l'anglais par opposition à certaines attitudes négatives envers le français, souvent liées au colonialisme. L'anglais, je suggère, peut être utilisé comme une source de motivation pour les apprenants d'anglais à étudier le français à l'université, en utilisant la langue cible comme moyen d'enseignement. Pour collecter les données, un questionnaire a été administré à 30 étudiants de deuxième année de master (Didactique de l'Anglais et des Langues Appliquées). Les résultats de cette étude ont révélé que les attitudes des apprenants envers le français sont plutôt positives puisqu'ils approuvent son apprentissage à l'Université. Quant à la proposition d'enseigner le français via l'anglais comme langue d'enseignement, la plupart des apprenants interrogés l'ont approuvée en raison de la motivation qu'ils développent envers l'anglais et de l'interaction mutuelle entre les langues concernées.
