Abstract This study aimed at identifying the level of metacognition in mathematics amongst third graders in middle school in the light of the variables: the level of mathematics achievement, the trend towards mathematics, gender. The study sample consisted of 131 students (66 males, 65 females) were selected at random from Abdelkader Korichi middle school in Rouissat Ouargla. To achieve the aims of the study used Metacognition Scale, and Questionnaire Trend towards Mathematics, are prepared by the researcher, Regarding mathematics achievement used school scores of the first chapter. The study was conducted in the academic year 2011/2012 . After a statistical analysis of the data using Excel 2007 and SPSS 19.0 programs study showed the following results: • The level of the sample in metacognition was low, where arithmetic average them 93.73, it is less than the arithmetic average theoretical (102), the percentages of levels of metacognition (high, medium, low), were respectively: 20.61% , 28.24%, 54.15%. • There were statistically significant differences in metacognition due to the variables: level of mathematics achievement and the nature of the trend towards mathematics. • There were no statistically significant differences in metacognition due to the gender.
