Authors : Ghernout Soumia .

Abstract

gender is one of the central and pertinent themes in present day discourse. It is maybe the vaguest notion to be discussed in psychology, political science, cultural studies and mainly literature. The present research paper is an attempt to make a contribution to the study of gender and identity in contemporary British literature. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) and te passion (1987) are the chosen materials used to depict how femininity is represented in Winterson's novels. As exceptional pieces of work, the novels offer an inside insight into the complex reality of Winterson’s female characters, and how they are torn between their femininity and societal expectations of women.
