In this work, a numerical study of natural convection in a square cavity filled with liquid metal was made. The cavity is subjected to a horizontal temperature gradient, the right wall is kept hot and the left wall is cold, also the vertical walls are maintained adiabatic. The conservation equations governing the flow are solved by the finite volume method. Validation and comparison of our results with those of another author (numerical and experimental) were made. The effect of Rayleigh number on flow structure and the thermal field was presented and discussed for the Rayleigh number ranging from 103, 104, 105 to 106. Subsequently, a parametrical study was conducted by varying the aspect ratio of 1, 2, 3 to 4, and the Prandtl number of four types of fluids (water, air, Gallium and Mercury).
