Authors : Koriche Hassiba .

Abstract

English has become the modern lingua franca in an economically, scientifically and culturally dominated world dominated by Anglo American countries. Therefore, any researcher must master English, at least to some extent, to reach international recognition and access relevant publications. English for Specific Purposes is here to serve researchers in science, technology, and business, but this is easily said than done. Mastering English is a challenge for many researchers in Algerian universities. This global language paves the way for the international scientific world. Therefore, PhD students and teachers of Science and Technology at Ain Temouchent University need the English language to participate in international conferences, write articles and share the results with a global audience. We wonder to what extent mastering English is a must for performing research and what are the strategies used to cope with such a situation. A questionnaire has been submitted to teachers and doctoral candidates at the Department of Science and Technology. It provided crucial information that consolidates the English language's position in research. Compared to other languages of wider communication, knowing English is like processing the fabled Aladdin's lamp. It permits opening the linguistic gates to international business, technology, and science. It initiates one's view into the caste of that power which controls vital knowledge. The convenience of having a lingua franca to serve global human relations and needs is appreciated by millions. The more critical a domain is, the most powerful a language becomes; this is the case with English.
