During more than three centuries of the Ottoman period in Algeria, Algerian privateering activity was maintened on a permanent basis. However, it has evolved considerably. Taking more and more importance in terms of income since the arrival of the Barbarossa brothers in the central Maghrib, it knew its apogee between 1580 and 1640 approximately, before undergoing a relative decline until the end of the 17th century. This decline was followed by a real collapse that lasted about ten years and revealed a deep crisis of the corsair system, as well as it marginality, which was new in the Algerian economy. From 1710 onwards, several attempts were made to revive Algerian privateering, until the final collapse of 1816-1830, which makes the crisis at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries appear to herald a profound change. The aim of this article is to define the chronological contours of this crisis and to describe it on the basis of precise data, particularly figures. In another article, which would follow this one, we would discuss the multiple causes of the crisis, as well as it aggravating factors.
