Abstract: The world theatre, especially the European one, witnessed tremendous development, and has gone through several stages until it had reached its current state. From the traditional theatre bound by classical rules to the non-Aristotelian Albrechtian theatre, then the avant-garde theatre, or as labelled by some critics, the anti-theatrical flair; or the theatre of the absurd which appeared as a result of the western theatrical writings from 1950 to 1960 that most of them simulated the reality of the European human after the two world wars. The trio Adamov, Lonesco, and Samuel Beckett could depict the miserable reality of the European people paying the price of war; while Beckett excelled in portraying the features and philosophy of that bleak reality in his play ‘Waiting for Godot’ embodying the theatre of the absurd par excellence, which is the topic of this paper. Absurdity as an artistic phenomenon in the European theatre is an inevitable result of the absurdity of the Western existence after the outbreak of WW II, which was the countdown to all values, customs, traditions, morals and beliefs. The world has lost its shape, and so was the case for art. it had to lose its shape and take the abstraction character violating the rules of Aristotelian logic. From this existential, intellectual and philosophical standpoint, this paper provides a close reading of the theatre of the absurd through the play ‘Waiting for Godot’ by Samuel Beckett. Keywords: Absurdity, Beckett theatre, Waiting for Godot.
