The Place Of Educational Research In Pre-service Teachers’ Academic And Professional Development In The Pre-service Education College-bouzareah-algiers

Authors : Hamdoud Amina .

Abstract

Many educational institutions around the world call for the need to involve preservice teachers to engage in research based learning. Bower (2010) claims that: „There has been a recent international emphasis towards integrating researchbased learning into the undergraduate curriculum‟. The research paper or „le mémoire de fin d‟étude‟ that student teachers present at the end of their undergraduate studies in the pre-service education college-Bouzareah in Algiers is one form of research based learning that fosters pre-service teachers‟ academic and professional development. Because the research paper in the school is not given the place it deserves at the end of the five year pre-service training, there is an urge to revisit its role which is that of equipping student teachers with the academic teaching skills they need to acquire for their future teaching career. This paper aims to highlight the extent to which the involvement of pre-service teachers in educational research is indispensible for training them academically and professionally. More specifically „integrating research into the pre-service teacher curriculum includes the development of students‟ ability to think critically, learn material deeply, link theory with practice, perform research processes, collaborate with others, and to cope with super complexity‟(ibid). In addition, one of the main objectives of this paper is to show that the components of the research paper or „mémoire‟ should be both the accumulation of theoretical knowledge about teaching and engagement in doing research. If student teachers focus their attention on writing research papers of a purely theoretical nature, this will prevent them from engaging in „real‟ educational research which involves more than knowledge of theories about teaching. The paper closes with recommendations for the standardization of the objectives of the research papers across all educational subjects in the school.
