A Contrastive Study Of English And Arabic Metaphor In Emily Dickinson’s And Sulimane Djuadi’s Poems

Abstract
This article aims to contrast and analyse some extracted metaphors of sadness, freedom ,happiness , and love selected from Emily Dickinson’s and Sulimane Djuadi’s poems on one hand and to identify the similarities and differences between metaphors in English and Arabic in terms of structure, function, and hermeneutic interpretation of metaphors on the other. In doing so, documentation technique is applied to collect the data and verify the metaphoricity of both languages. Substantially, the comparative study shows that there are both similarities and differences between metaphors in English and Arabic. The similarities display the poets’ genius for using the implicit meaning of metaphor to talk about sadness, freedom, happiness, and love. The differences, however, demonstrate the notion of metaphor in western rhetoric has come to mean a human conceptual system and a cognitive tool rather than a matter of language. Cet article vise à contraster et à analyser certaines métaphores extraites de la tristesse, de la liberté, du bonheur et de l'amour sélectionnées dans les poèmes d'Emily Dickinson et de Sulimane Djuadi d'une part et d'identifier les similitudes et les différences entre les métaphores en anglais et en arabe en termes de structure, fonction, et l'interprétation herméneutique des métaphores d'autre part. Pour cela, une technique de documentation est appliquée pour collecter les données et vérifier la métaphoricité des deux langues. En substance, l'étude comparative montre qu'il existe à la fois des similitudes et des différences entre les métaphores en anglais et en arabe. Les similitudes montrent le génie des poètes à utiliser le sens implicite de la métaphore pour parler de tristesse, de liberté, de bonheur et d'amour. Les différences, cependant, démontrent que la notion de métaphore dans la rhétorique occidentale est devenue un système conceptuel humain et un outil cognitif plutôt qu'une question de langage. يهدف هذا المقال إلى مقارنة وتحليل بعض الاستعارات في موضوع الحزن ،الحرية ،السعادة والحب،والتي تتبعناها في قصائد إميلي ديكنسون وسليمان جوادي .وقد اشتغلنا في الدراسة على المقارنة ببيان أوجه التشابه والاختلاف بين الاستعارات في النموذجين -الإنجليزي والعربي - من حيث البنية والوظيفة ،من جهة ، وتأويل الاستعارات من جهة أخرى. ولأجل ذلك اعتمدنا تقنية التوثيق لجمع البيانات والتحقق من استعارة اللغتين.وقد أظهرت الدراسة المقارنة أن هناك أوجه تشابه واختلاف بين الاستعارات باللغتين الإنجليزية والعربية؛ حيث تُظهر أوجه التشابه عبقرية الشاعرين في استخدام المعنى الضمني للاستعارة في الحديث عن الحزن والحرية والسعادة والحب. أما الاختلاف فيظهر في كون الاستعارة في الخطاب الغربي أصبحت تعني نظامًا مفاهيميًا بشريًا وأداة معرفية بدلاً من كونها مسألة لغة.
