الملخص

The rapid developments that the world is witnessing today have unquestionably forced us to keep pace with the dynamics of scientific and technological development, which covered various areas of life. In the field of language processing, new possibilities for the transmission of knowledge as well as programs and mechanisms were developed. Since the computer is one of the technologies brought by technological development, using it and its advanced programs has become necessary, as contemporary linguistic studies have become directly dependent on it in addressing issues. Hence, our study comes to examine computational linguistics as a branch of applied linguistics, which exploits technology in its various branches, and shows how it moved from description to characterization in language processing. Moreover, this paper also aims to reveal the various fields of computational linguistics as it is the finest point of intersection of linguistics with other technical sciences in order to prepare the language for automated processing in both reception and production. In view of this, the study raises the following questions: What are the premises and principles of computational linguistics? How did computational linguistics move from the modularity of description to the effectiveness of characterization?
