Health spending in Algeria grows significantly for over two decades, due to the combination of several factors related to the epidemiological and demographic transition, health care provision and the almost total social coverage of the Algerian population. Medication use, supported by social security agencies (CASNOS and CNAS) naturally follows this trend. The objective of this article is to study the extent of the evolution of drug expenditure in Algeria, while examining the main causes of this increase and the measures of control and reforms to reduce this bill A retrospective study was carried out over two decades for analyzing the rate of change of pharmaceutical expenditure. The increase in pharmaceutical products spending is one of the main causes of dysfunction in the Algerian health system and several reform measures have been taken by the Algerian authorities to remedy to constantly growing bill.
