Gender Stereotypes In The Language School Textbooks: A Comparative Study

Abstract

Gender stereotypes are everywhere in the educational setting, including the learning materials, mainly the textbooks.The present research aims to investigate gender stereotypes in the current Arabic, French and English First Year school textbooks which are used in the Algerian Middle School. For this end, this research examines the personal and the physical traits of the male and the female characters. It also examines the professional and the domestic roles of these characters. Regarding data collection content analysis is used as a method to collect data regarding such gender traits and roles. In this research, it was found that the gender stereotypes prevailed in all the textbooks without exception. Regarding comparison, it was found that the Arabic textbook was the most stereotypical and the English textbook was the least stereotypical while the French textbook remained at the middle position regarding the gender stereotypes.الأفكار النمطية الخاصة بالنوع الإجتماعي متواجدة في كل مكان في المحيط التربوي بما فيه الوسائل التعليمية خاصة الكتب المدرسية. هذا البحث يهدف إلى دراسة الأفكار النمطية الخاصة بالنوع الإجتماعي في الكتب المدرسية للغة العربية, الفرنسية و الإنجليزية المستعملة حاليا بالمدرسة المتوسطة بالجزائر. لهذا الغرض, هذا البحث درس الميزات الشخصية و البدنية للشخصيات الذكور و الإناث. هذا البحث درس أيضا الأدوار المهنية و المنزلية لهذه الشخصيات. فيما يخص جمع المعطيات,تقنية تحليل المحتوى أستعملت لجمع المعطيات حول ميزات و أدوار النوع الإجتماعي. وجد في هذا البحث أن كتاب اللغة العربية كان أكثر نمطية و كتاب اللغة الإنجليزية كان أقل نمطية أما كتاب اللغة الفرنسية توسطهما فيما يخص الأفكار النمطية الخاصة بالنوع الإجتماعي. Les stéréotypes de genre sont partout dans le contexte éducatif, comprenant les matériaux de l'apprentissage, surtout les manuels scolaires. Cette recherche vise à enqueter les stereotypes de genre dans les manuels scolaire courants d'arabe, français et anglais qui sont utilisés dans l'école moyenne dans l'algérie. à cette fin, cette recherche examine les caratéristiques personelles et physiques des caractères hommes et femmes. Cette recherche aussi examines les roles professionels et domestiques de ces caractères.Concernant la collection des donnés, l'analyse du contenu était utilisée pour collecter les données autour de ces caratéristiques et roles de genre. Dans cette recherche, it était trouvé que le manuel d'arabe était le plus stereotypé et le manuel d'anglais était le moins stéréotypé concernant les stéréotypes de genre
