لطالما كان يراود الإنسان ذلك الحلم اليوتوبي أملا في الانعتاق من أسر المحدوديات البيولوجية الحاكمة لوجوده، وهو ما كان اليوم لتحقق بعض من تلك الأماني، إذ أصبح بإمكانه بفضل تكنولوجيا الهندسة الوراثية بمعالجة الجينات المريضة والمشوهة، وهذا تفاديا للأمراض المستعصية علاجهاـ، والأكثر من ذلك أتاحت هذه التكنولوجية الحيوية إمكانية الحصول على طفل "حسب الطلب" وبصفات منتقاة وبقدرات جسمية وعقلية معززة، إلا أن هذا الأمر طرح عدة مسائل تتعلق بالطبيعة البشرية، والهوية الشخصية، والمساواة، والحقوق، ومسائل أخرى..
